This weekend, we were invited to the Breath of Life Awards 2017, hosted by Ed Begley Jr., sponsored by Breathe California of Los Angeles. We were truly honored. For the 2016-2017 year, BREATHE California of Los Angeles County (‘BREATHE LA’) was one of our grantees. We are so impressed with the work they do within the community… and on top of that, they train, educate and bring awareness to the disease which took the life of our mother, Nasia Adisa. The work ‘BREATHE LA’ does and whom they partner with, definitely allows me to breathe easier… as does, thousands of other Southern California residents. We are thankful!
The event was wondeful, informative and took place in such a remarkable place… The Petersen Automotive Museum. Not only did we see cars and bikes of old, we also were able to see vehicles of new that embrace clean air quality. Fun fact: Cars of old also had clean air alternatives, such as the Battery Electric, 1915 Detroit Electric Model 61 Brougham. The Petersen staff memeber told us that this vehicle was designed for women who did not have the strength to crack the engine for start up and that it turned out to be a big hit with the men too!
The 2017 Honorees were: CVS Health, Breath of Life Award; Los Angeles City Councilman, Joe Buscaino, Legislator of the Year Award; Tom Steyer, Visionary Award; and LAC-USC Breathmobile Program, Community Impact Award. All had great acceptance speeches and many left me with great thoughts about our breathing future.
Since our mom passed away from asthma complications, LAC BreathMobile honoree comments were very hopeful. There was mention of a 76% reduction in emergency department asthma visits and school attendance had increased by 83% for school age sufferers through the use of the BreatheMobile. Likewise, the BreatheMobile is in 11 cities and has seen and heard countless stories of how BreathMobile physicians have changed children’s lives.
What CVS Health is doing also made me smile. Not only is CVS the 1st retailer of it’s kind to stop selling tobacco products in their stores, there was also a 1% reduction or rather, 95 million less tobacco products sold within its 1st year.
Finally, I liked what Councilman Joe Buscaino was asking and striving for: a Zero emissions port in Los Angeles!
