Nasia was a committed, passionate, trailblazing humanitarian with philanthropic interests. She had a gregarious, fun-loving personality, offbeat humor, and a desire to love on people. No one was a stranger. Nasia’s legacies were many and impactful. They included a legacy of entrepreneurship, fashion, freedom fighting, visionary, and faith. Upon your chance meeting with Nasia, you would have left uplifted, educated, and improved through hearing of her multi-faceted life experiences and desires to be of service.
After her first trip to Ghana in the early 80’s, Nasia returned to Oakland, California, a recharged and rededicated woman with a new vision – Ghana. She felt an internal push to encourage and explain why we all needed to view Ghana from more of an investment/contribution eye, rather than only, a tourist eye. Nasia had claimed Ghana as her new home and declared to her children and grandchildren that if there came a time to give her last breath, she wanted it to be on the continent and her ashes to be scattered across Ghana’s coastline, situated in the Gulf of Guinea.
Nasia wanted Ghana to win. She felt it necessary to give countless hours supporting charitable causes, as her mother, Serrella Brooks, had done in the United States. Yes, Nasia’s charitable legacy is worth remembering along with her other legacies. The Walker Johnson & Nasia Legacy Foundation was established to extend and preserve Nasia’s wonderful footprint on humanity and its communities.
Unfortunately, Nasia desire to die in Africa abruptly came true on March 28, 2015, in Kumasi, Ghana, West Africa from a spontaneous heart attack brought on by asthma complications. She was 67 years old.
The Walker Johnson & Nasia (WJ&N) Legacy Foundation look forward to establishing meaningful relationships with community organizations, donors, volunteers, and students. Together, our collective giving and serving will make an impact in the lives of students and help communities in the cities of Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; Oakland, California and Ghana, West Africa.
May God bless Nasia’s legacy and become a beacon of unwavering love she shared with so many people in the states and abroad.
